Sydney ceramic artist and art historian Dr Joyce (Joy) Warren passed away in July. Born in the UK in 1922, Joy exhibited for many years interspersed with a long academic career. Joy studied at Julian Ashton and National Art School, Sydney, the Camberwell School of Art, London, gained a B.A. (Hons) in Fine Arts at the University of Sydney and a Doctorate in Ceramics from Wollongong University. From 1979 she lectured in art history and theory at the City Art Institute and from 1982 at the Sydney College of the Arts. Joy was on the first Craft Board of the Australia Council that later became Craft Australia. She was a publisher and was the first editor of Craft Australia. Joy's poetic ceramic work is represented in many major public collections. Joy's husband, respected senior artist Guy Warren, often painted on her ceramics. Working together on many of her pieces, particularly in later years, Guy's images of figures in the landscape complemented the gentle character of Joy's ceramics. An exhibition of Joy Warren's ceramics will be featured at Stella Downer Fine Art in 2012.
