Steve Lopes
4 - 5 August 2012
Lynne Dwyer
Open Gallery, Spectrum, Sydney Morning Herald
Figurative painter Steve Lopes is interested in how people interact with the landscape. One way, unfortunately, is through the rubbish they leave behind. Here he paints semi-naked figures surrounded by the detritus of modern life. Lopes obviously relishes a challenge and his figures twist, hunch and roll about on the ground, while foreshortened torsos and limbs demonstrate his mastery of perspective. Framework figure I is pictured. Several paintings come from a trip to Fowlers Gap for the recent Not the Way Home exhibition.
Until August 18. Tuesday - Saturday, 11am - 6pm, Stella Downer, 2 Danks St, Waterloo, 9319 1006.
