Insight Radical: Where Science Meets Art

Steve Lopes will have work featured in Insight Radical: Where Science Meets Art, opening Tuesday 26 November, 6.30 - 8.30 pm at Mclemoi Gallery, Chippendale. The exhibition continues until 9 December 2013, along with artists Tony Lloyd, Anna Madeleine, Natalie O'Connor, Peter Sharp and Ruth Waller, whom participated with Lopes in an artist residency with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology.

About Insight Radical:

Insight Radical aims to be a true collaboration between scientists and artists were each world is shared, leading to a higher level of understanding. Insight Radical hopes to foster individual artists' interests and progression, and enhance scientists' ability to think big picture and communicate ideas. Furthermore Insight Radical invites community members to gain an insight into this collaboration by attending workshops and exhibitions associated with the initiative.


Born in Sydney in 1971, Steve Lopes graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts) from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales in 1991. In the same year he studied with the New York Art Students League in the USA and in 1998 he studied with the London Print Studio, UK. Since 1996 Lopes has had over twenty solo exhibitions across Australia and the UK. He has also exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including Not the Way Home a group exhibition of 13 prominent Australian artists and the Salon de Refuses, both at the S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney and touring in 2012. He is a frequent finalist in national awards including the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, Kings School Art Prize, Kedumba Drawing Award and the Kilgour Figurative Art Prize. In 1997 Lopes was awarded the Young Artist Award at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, London, England. In 2011 he completed a residency at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing. His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia; BHP Biliton; Bundanon Collection; State Library of New South Wales; Federal Parliament House Art Collection; University of Sydney Art Collection; University of Wollongong Art Collection; The University of Melbourne Library; Time Warner, New York; Rolls Royce, London; British Biotec; Psion Communications, London; Cable & Wireless, UK; Windsor & Newton; as well as Private collections in Australia, United Kingdom, Italy & the United States of America.
